We strive by example to express our faith and to witness the message of Christ by loving God and neighbor.
"'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.' The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests." - Mt 22:8b-10

Prayer shawls have been used throughout the generations, our Jewish ancestors used prayer shawls to help them to pray and remind them of God's constant presence. ST. JOSEPH PARISH CELEBRATES THE LITURGICAL YEAR

What's Ordinary about Ordinary Time in the Liturgical Year? Ordinary Time is one of the seasons of the liturgical year. It comes in two blocks of time. One occurs during the period of weeks between the Christmas and Lenten seasons. The other, longer block of time occurs after the Easter season and lasts until the beginning of Advent. On most days during Ordinary Time, the color of the priest's vestments is green, a color of hope. The name of the season is derived from the word ordinal, meaning "counted," and refers to the ordering-or numbering-of Sundays. We count in order to keep track of the weeks and the readings for the weekend and weekday liturgies. The lectionary for Ordinary Time guides us through one of the synoptic Gospels- Matthew, Mark, or Luke-each year. Chapter by chapter, we listen to the events of Jesus' life and ministry as well as his teachings and parables. In response, we walk the way of Christ by following his example of love, compassion, mercy, and justice. This season invites us to make the most of each day in order to grow spiritually and to enliven our capacity to live as faith-filled disciples of Jesus.

Join us at the next Pasta Dinner to celebrate and learn more about our Liturgical Year at the Last (Pasta) Supper of Ordinary Time: Monday, November 7th, 5:15 - 7 pm.

Monday Movies will look more closely at the Apostolic Fathers at the Morning Movie on Monday, November 7th following the 9 a.m. Mass. Our movie on the Apostolic Fathers will take you on an exciting journey to the Roman Empire and the world of the first Christians. You'll sit at the feet of the apostles, celebrate the Eucharist in hiding, and tremble at the suffering they endured for Jesus Christ. Retrace their steps through Israel, Turkey, France and Italy. All this in a fast-paced, entertaining biography, travel documentary, Bible study, apologetics course and Church history study rolled into one remarkable adventure!

CALLING ALL YOUNG ADULTS

Come and meet other young adults, age 18-35, married and single, in the Watertown-Belmont collaborative. We will begin gathering at 6:30 p.m. on Monday October 17th in Saint Patrick's Parish Center (26 Rear Chestnut Street - ample parking and MBTA accessible). Food will be provided, bring a friend. NEW ROMAN MISSAL

NEW ROMAN MISSAL -- 6 WEEKS AWAY!

Q: In the Nicene Creed, why has "one in being with the Father" been changed to "consubstantial with the Father?"

A: The new translation is more in keeping with the ancient Latin text of the Creed and a more accurate translation.

The bishops at the Council of Nicea (AD 325), in order to ensure that Jesus was professed as the eternal Son of God, equal to the Father, stated that he is "the Son of God, begotten from the Father, the only-begotten, that is from the substance of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, the same substance ( homoousion) with the Father..." The Creed of the Council of Constantinople (381), which is professed at all Sunday Masses and Solemnities within the Catholic Church, similarly stated: "We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of the same substance ( homoousion) with the Father."

When these two ancient creeds were translated into Latin, the term "homoousion" was rendered as "consubstantialem," that is, "the same substance of the Father." Prior to the Second Vatican Council, the Latin "consubstantialem" was rendered as "consubstantial" within the English translation of the Creed. Many theologians and the Holy See thought that the term "consubstantial" was more in keeping with the Latin tradition and a more literal and accurate translation than the more recent "one in being." Mp> This is in keeping with the mind of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, which published an Instruction, entitled Liturgiam Authenticam. It stated: "Certain expressions that belong to the heritage of the whole or of a great part of the ancient Church, as well as others that have become part of the general human patrimony, are to be respected by a translation that is as literal as possible" (no. 56).

Taken from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (usccb.org/romanmissal/)

To help prepare for the New Roman Missal, our parish will be running a study program called A Biblical Walk Through the Mass. If you've ever wondered why we say what we say and do what we do during the Liturgy, this is the study for you! You will go deep into the Scriptural roots of the Mass, and see the beauty and riches unfold before your eyes like never before. This study is based on the new translation of the Mass. Studies will be offered in the Parish on:

  • Sundays at 9 am (10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, and 11/13)
  • Sundays at 6 pm (10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, and 11/13) and
  • Mondays at Noon (10/17, 10/24, 10/31, 11/7, and 11/14).
For more information or to register for A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, contact Christa Lucas (clucas@stjoseph.belmont.ma.us).

COME TO THE TABLE

St. Joseph Parish welcomes those who want to join themselves to Christ through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. We also welcome Christians from other Christian communions who, already baptized, wish to complete their sacraments of initiation in the Catholic Church (Confirmation and Eucharist). The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) is a process that assists people in becoming members of the Roman Catholic Church. The process focuses on the spiritual formation of the person through the handing on the rich faith tradition of the Catholic Church. Participants study the beliefs and practices of our faith as well as engage in the communal worship and mission of the parish community. Interested in learning more about RCIA and the Sacraments of Initiation? Contact Christa Lucas at 617-484-5479 (clucas@stjoseph.belmont.ma.us).
